Windshield
Use and Care Instructions
Cleaning
Mild detergent or glass cleaner is recommended for cleaning of all
parts of the windshield. A citrus based cleaner may be used on aluminum
frames pieces to remove any adhesive or other hard to remove residue,
however, Ameritex Technologies does not recommend the use of any
solvents, ammonia, bleach or any other harsh cleaners on any part
of the windshield. If a piece of glass appears to have light scratches,
it may be residue that is stuck to the surface of the glass. This
will most easily be removed by using 0000 steel wool after the glass
has been thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate glass cleaner.
Replacing
Components
If a component becomes damaged and must be replaced, the following
guidelines will help.
If only the
walk through door is to be replaced, it may be able to be removed
without removing the port front. Using a small punch or other suitable
object and a mallet, tap the hinge pin up from the bottom until
it can be grasped with pliers and pulled out. Installation is the
reverse of removal.
If the bottom of
the hinge pin is not accessible, the port front will need to be removed.
The following instructions also apply to removal and replacement of
a starboard front:
First, the support
stanchion must be detached from the windshield. Remove the two screws.
Next, the vinyl
screw track cover must be removed to access the mounting screws.
This is most easily done by starting at one end, and then pulling
the rest completely out.
The mounting screws
must then be removed. The screws that Ameritex supplies are #8 Phillips
head, epoxy coated screws, requiring a #30 aircraft (long) type drill
bit. (Some boat manufacturers use different types of screws or through
bolts to mount their windshields). To have the best chance of removing
these screws without shearing them off, use a variable speed screw
gun and gradually increase the torque just until the screw starts
to back out. If there is a screw through the tip of the wing header,
remove it first. Be careful that the windshield does not fall off
the edge of the deck; use tape or have someone hold the windshield
while the screws are being removed. Once all the screw are removed,
the front can be removed.
Any screws that
sheared off during removal will need to be ground down flush with
the deck. If the front is being replaced, apply foam tape to the
bottom extrusion. Attach the new door to the port front (or vice
versa) and position on the deck. Note that the hole locations may
not line up exactly where the old ones were. Also, if a hole in
the bottom extrusion lines up with a sheared off screw, a new hole
should be drilled nearby, through the extrusion large enough to
let the screw pass freely through it. The fronts are located properly
when there is an even ¼" gap between the door flange
and the starboard front, on the inside of the windshield. Keep in
mind that the front may be drooping down slightly without the support
stanchion attached, this will affect the gap at the top of the windshield.
Drill pilot holes into the deck where necessary, drilling those
along the wing at a slight angle inward to prevent damaging the
bottom extrusion. Any new holes should also be countersunk through
the gel coat to prevent chipping off. Screw the windshield to the
deck with the supplied
screws.
Attach support
stanchions to the windshield with the two screws that were removed.
Do not attempt to use a different type of screw, as breakage of
the
glass may result.
Replace screw
track cover.
